Beard Balm – The ins and outs

Beard balm, also called beard wax is not quite so self explanatory as beard oil and we were recently contacted by a customer who had purchased a beard balm and was having a bit of difficulty with it, he wasn’t sure how much to use, how to apply it or exactly what it was supposed to be doing for him.

Here I’ll answer those questions and hopefully give you an idea of why you should be adding a beard balm to your range or beard care products.

One way to think of beard balm is as a solid oil. Take all the goodies you find in regular beard oil, add a solidifying agent, usually bees wax and voila you’ve got a beard balm. The ration of the different ingredients will dictate how solid the balm is.

So if it’s basically solid oil, why do I need it as well?

In some respects this will come down to personal preference, what works best for you. But there are definite differences and benefits to be had from using a balm.

A balm will give more of a coating to the individual hair and therefore give a bit more of a longer lasting conditioning treatment

First off a balm will give more of a coating to the individual hair and therefore give a bit more of a longer lasting conditioning treatment. A stronger balm can also help to shape a larger beard.

So how much do you need and how do you apply it? Obviously the exact amount will depend on the size of the beard, a rule of thumb is to start of with an amount about the size of your thumbnail. Softer balms can just be scooped out, for a harder balm just scrape out an amount with the back of your nail. Next rub it between your palms to warm it up and soften it and then apply to the beard. You’ll need to work it in a bit more than an oil. Make sure you get it right down to the skin underneath. A great way to make sure it’s evenly spread and worked in is to use a beard brush. Apply the balm and then give your beard a good old brush. (make sure you occasionally clean the brush with a little warm water).

A balm is a great addition to you beard care regime. It will give you an excellent deep down condition to both your hair and your skin, and for a large beard will help give a defined shape.

So there you have it.
