Supplier Spotlight – soothe-me Skin Care

Suzie Hacker of Sooth-me
We got together with Suzie Hacker from Soothe-me to get the low down on her East London based business.
The Beard Emporium: What inspired you to start your business?
Suzie Hacker: Back in 2000 I was searching for natural remedies to heal my own skin
(eczema/sensitivity). Skin healing/remedies for sensitive skin were hard to find in stores so I started to study in order to make my own. I was also allergic to synthetic perfumes so studied natural alternative essential oils and found they worked amazingly well! I went on to study more and added to the range, and now I have a proper brand with little soothe-me soldiers out there helping sensitive skin on a daily basis!

TBE: Why did you add beard care products to your range?
SH: At the request of beardy friends and from male customers at market stalls.
TBE: What’s your favourite part of the manufacturing process?
SH: Mixing it up! Getting out all the ingredients and ‘cooking’ them up.
TBE: Tell us about the ingredients you use, what’s important when choosing them?
SH: I only want to use what nature provides. I try to buy products that are sourced as locally as possible, organic when possible, and are from small businesses or individuals. For example my bees wax comes from my friends mum-in-law who keeps bees in her garden in Somerset.
My favourite scent of the moment is Vetiver and this week I am studying about the herb chickweed for its anti inflammatory properties and benefits to itchy skin.

SH: The scent and texture and conditioning effect it gives the beard I am told!
TBE: How do you test your products?
SH: First on paper (so in theory), then on myself and willing human Guinea pigs. Then send to my safety assessor for sign off.
TBE: Who has your favourite beard at the moment?
SH: Hmm well my friend Ash has a great one, but famous celeb for best life time beard would be Jim Henson and right now pretty boy Jared Leto
Oh and Matthias Holst beard is pretty spectacular!
Thanks Suzie. It’s great to know that your products not only make us look and smell good but they’re also doing us good!
